Medieval Times '29 (2)
Digital Peasants, The Symbolism, The Performance.
Where were we? oh right, In December of 2019 I read an article in the New Yorker titled, In 2029, the Internet Will Make Us Act Like Medieval Peasants.
The way I read every line of that article indicated a curiosity, one that I needed to chase. I made it my mission to track the forecast until 2029 (at least).
Where we left off in the first edition of Medieval Times ‘29 I was telling you about the music I had been collecting that contained medieval sounding instruments. I found a lot of trap music and rNb in the mix. I also stumbled through several classical music playlists picking my favorite hauntingly beautiful pieces.
I am captivated by the apparent fantasy of the times, like the kind of medieval times you see in The Princess Bride (1987) or The Sword in the Stone (1963).
The Princess Bride (1987)
The Sword In The Stone (1963)
And I mean that to say, I picture a sort of chivalry, courage, romance and magic when I think of the medieval times. While it’s this sort of imagery we see mimicked on screen, in music videos and fashion editorials things in reality the internet seems to be reviving the spirit of the peasant, the village idiot, and the imbecile king for certain.
Let’s examine the definition of the peasant to get us familiar with the term.
